Breaking a record has never been so delicious

Croquette lovers of the world: this is your chance. Next November 14th is the International Guinness World Records Day.

What better way to honor this celebration than by breaking one of the greatest Spanish achievements. And yes, Spaniards, because one of the feats we can be most proud of is the world record for eating croquettes. That dish that wins over everyone from Madrid locals and Basques to Sevillians. Some prefer ham, others meat, but one thing is clear: if croquettes are on the menu, croquettes will be on the table.

However, achieving this feat might be harder than it seems. First, you’ll have to beat the world record for eating croquettes, currently held by the Basque Patxi Bollos. Although deceased, he has managed to keep the crown since 1936.

Legend says that during a horse-drawn carriage ride from a gastronomic society to a banquet, he smelled this delicious treat and couldn’t resist tasting it. He loved them so much that he ate 236 croquettes and even had dinner afterward. This amazed everyone at the banquet, but any good croquette fan knows that croquettes, no matter how many, don’t really fill you up.

There are many croquette-eating records waiting to be broken. In fact, more recently, competitive eater Joe Burgerchallenge amazed audiences on a talent show by eating 23 croquettes in under 2 minutes.

Though different, both feats are admired by experts and all croquette lovers. And you, do you dare? We’ll be waiting for you with a tray of freshly made ones.
